I've been dragon boating since 2013. In late 2016, I was diagnosed with Leukemia. Thanks to the overwhelming amount of love and support I received from Dragon Boat Charleston during my cancer treatment, I am forever dedicated to supporting the year-long health and wellness programs of DBC. After my lifesaving bone marrow transplant, I continued to be a CPC (Charleston Paddle Club) paddler, and then became a DBC paddler, too. I'm privileged to be part of the DBC family that we describe as a "floating support group." I strongly believe in the difference dragon boating and DBC make in the lives of cancer patients and survivors.
Festival Day:
Over the years, my friends, family and colleagues have joined and/or supported my festival teams. They are such good sports! Every year that we raced, we showed up in full costume. We've been 80s themed "Totally Paddical," and for several years we were "Super Power Paddlers." Not only do my teammates give their time and effort to raise funds for DBC. They also bring incredible spirit and fun to this free family-friendly event. This year, for the second time, our team will be "Where The Wild Things Paddle." Think painted animal faces, fangs, claws, horns, scales, fur, tails, and lots and lots of roaring and gnashing our teeth on the way to the race start. WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU at the festival! Stop by our tent for some fun, for a beer or two, for some goodies for the kiddos, and to help us cheer for all the teams racing on the water.
In the meantime, My Wild Ones (or mild ones!), I will be howling at the moon and practicing my paddling stroke. Most importantly, I'll be enjoying each and every beautiful day that I've been given to be part of this community.
